Electrification of the Tirana - Durrës - Rinas railway/ Loan agreement approved, Muçaj: 50% of the costs are EU grants

The Laws Committee approved the loan agreement for the electrification of the Tirana - Durrës - Rinas railway line. The transition from the initial project with fuel trains to electric trains costs about 22 million euros, half of which will be a grant from the European Union.
"It is supported by 11.5 million euros, plus 50% of the total investment value for electrification is supported by the European Union through the Western Balkans framework. So with a value of almost the same value in the form of a grant for these works which we will only mention for information purposes: the complete electrification of the Durrës-Tirana railway segment, the new branch towards Tirana international airport, the supply of electro-railway equipment, the construction and installation of the switching system, which is the electrical line that supplies electricity to trains. Also, the construction of two important substations at the Tirana and Durrës point, so not only the electrification of the line but also the substations that cover the energy supply, testing, certification and commissioning of the electrification system", - said Enkelejda Muçaj, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Energy.
Meanwhile, a few days ago, the head of Albanian Railways, Ergys Verdho, announced to TV SCAN that the tender has been finalized, with the announcement of the company that will carry out the works.
He said that the contract with the Italian company is expected to be signed in July, while works will begin in September. The winning bid has a value of 22 million euros and includes the full electrification of the line, including 4 km that will be built to restore the train station in the capital.
Electrification is one of the last links for the finalization and commissioning of the line, while civil works have currently been completed and work is underway on the construction of station buildings.
In parallel, the tender procedure for the construction of the Rinas station, which is not part of the initial contract, is being developed, as well as the tender for the construction of the segment that will enable the connection from the bus terminal in Kashar to the former train station in the capital.
