Albanian Customs, ready for the EU - Strategy/ Costs for businesses are reduced, customs clearance time is reduced

Albanian businesses will benefit from the unification of customs procedures with those of the European Union.
The recently adopted Strategy for the Modernization and Harmonization of Albanian Customs Information Systems with European Union Systems, for the period 2025–2030, marks an important step towards full compliance of customs systems with EU information technology standards and architecture.
The main objective of the strategy is that by 2030, Albania will have a customs infrastructure fully harmonized with the EU Customs Code, facilitating gradual integration into the European single market and consolidating the accession process. The strategy also aims to harmonize and complete the legal framework for customs information systems, in accordance with European Union requirements.
Specifically, the implementation of the Strategy and Action Plan is expected to bring direct and long-term benefits, including: trade facilitation, mainly in terms of reducing customs clearance times and increasing operational efficiency; economic integration, focused on harmonization with EU standards and easier access to the common market); strengthening institutional transparency and integrity; increased national security, thanks to advanced risk management systems that prevent smuggling and illegal cross-border activities.
Businesses will also have direct benefits in terms of reduced administrative costs, simplified procedures, and a more favorable environment for investment, increasing the competitiveness of Albanian companies in international markets.
The General Directorate of Customs is engaged in the European integration process, especially in Chapter 29 - Customs Union, considering the modernization of information systems as one of the main priorities for guaranteeing the efficient functioning of customs as the first gate of entry and the last gate of exit to the common European market.
