Australia bans social media for under-16s - Parents support decision, while Meta

Parents in Sydney expressed support for a ban on social media for young people in Australia, while Meta began blocking and disabling the accounts of users under 16 on Facebook and Instagram.

Some parents, however, had uncertainties about how the policy will be implemented and warned that its impact may take time to assess.

Meta said last month that it would begin notifying users believed to be between 13 and 15 years old, informing them that their accounts would be closed via in-app messages, email and SMS.

Teenagers received notifications on Instagram warning them of the upcoming social media ban for users under 16. Meta said the process was expected to be completed by December 10, when the ban will take effect.

The decision is being closely watched by other countries that are considering similar measures, setting a global precedent for how major American tech giants balance child safety with access to digital services.

This ban places the onus on social media platforms to take “reasonable steps” to block minors from opening accounts. Platforms that violate the law could be fined up to $32 million.

The Australian government says the move comes in response to growing evidence that platforms are not doing enough to protect children from harmful content.
