Birth bonus, only 1 million euros are given - 3-month period/ Falling birth rate, 4 million euros remain "stock"
Only 1 million euros have been distributed to babies born in the first 3 months of this year in Albania.
Official data from the Ministry of Finance show that for the period January-March, there was a drastic decrease in the fund disbursed for fertility promotion, to 4 million euros less than the same period a year ago.
Specifically, in the first three months of 2024, 5 million euros were distributed, while the decline this year is estimated at -80%.
It is also the same decrease compared to the planning made, where it was anticipated that 5 million euros would be provided in this quarter.
These figures show a drastic decline in the population's fertility, which is leading the country towards rapid aging.
This is also confirmed by INSTAT data, according to which births in the first quarter of 2025 were recorded at 4,662, the lowest figure since 2011 for the same period.
Comparative data from 2011 with projections for 2025 show an average decrease of 37.2% nationally, but in some counties, the decline is much deeper.
This trend will continue to deal an even greater blow to the labor market, the pension scheme, and the country's economic development.
The birth bonus has been established in the form of immediate financial assistance for parents with newborn babies since 2019. The assistance provided is 40 thousand lek for the birth of the first baby; 80 thousand lek for the birth of the second baby; and 120 thousand lek for the birth of the third baby and subsequent babies.
For parents who give birth to twins, the benefit amount is 80 thousand lek for each baby, while for parents who give birth to more than two babies born at the same time, the benefit amount is 120 thousand lek for each baby.
The bonus is received immediately after the parents register the newborn in the civil registry for all families that have children, regardless of socio-economic status.
Children born abroad are excluded from the right to benefit from it. The total fund is projected to be 2.2 billion lekë this year.
