During the next year, about ALL 852 million is expected to be the additional income from the excise tax on cigarettes, as well as the 20% VAT on this increased excise amount. The calendar for cigarettes and tobacco 2022-2026, programs an increase in the excise duty for these goods every year until 2026.
The most recent data from the General Directorate of Customs show that compared to 2023, excise revenues have marked a significant increase in the January-October period of this year.
Specifically, cigarettes realized 1.7 million ALL more income, gas 154 million ALL more, while other goods 228 million ALL more than the same period a year ago. Consumption of excise goods has also increased, with 55 tons more cigarettes, 6,984 tons more beer and 249 tons more coffee.
The total revenues from excise duty during the period January-October of this year reached 48 billion ALL, almost 4.5 billion ALL more compared to the 10-month period of the previous year.
Albania applies excise duties at a specific rate per unit and the level of excise duties on the main excise goods such as fuel and tobacco is generally lower than the excise duty levels applied by EU countries.
The drafting of a new calendar for increasing the level of excise duty on tobacco and its sub-products for the period 2027 and following, aims to align with the level of excise duty applied in the EU, aiming at unification of the level of excise duty between tobacco and by-products his.
