Economic Impact of the Boston Marathon - The sporting event generated over $500 million in revenue
The 2024 Boston Marathon significantly boosted the Massachusetts economy with an estimated impact of $509 million, as reported by the UMass Donahue Institute. This figure includes operational costs, expenses from participants and spectators, as well as secondary economic impacts such as taxes and vendor expenses.
Spectators contributed $209 million, with a large portion coming from outside New England, highlighting international curiosity about the event. The marathon weekend saw over 30,000 participants and attracted an estimated 500,000 spectators, many of whom stayed overnight, further boosting local economic activity.
The event also achieved record fundraising levels through its charity program, reaching a total of $71.9 million. This comprehensive economic impact study highlights the importance of the marathon to tourism, local businesses and its wider cultural significance.
The Boston Marathon generated 2,900 jobs and $207 million in income for Massachusetts families, with 1,900 jobs and $144 million in income especially in Boston.
This year's marathon marked the first time the economic impact study included spectator spending, which was estimated at $208 million. According to the study, about half of the spectators and more than 80% of the runners traveled from outside New England, highlighting the marathon's appeal as a national and international event.
Average spending for visitors who stayed overnight in Boston was $500, including food and entertainment, contributing significantly to local businesses.
The Boston Athletic Association reported that in 2024, the official charity program raised a record $45.7 million across 160 organizations, contributing to a total philanthropic impact of $71.9 million.
