5 million euros from flight tax - Cheap tickets and high number of passengers increase revenue by 40.4%
The introduction of low-cost airlines into the market, increasing competition and significantly reducing ticket prices, has led to an increased number of citizens and tourists choosing to travel by air. Tickets now start at 10 euros for flights to various destinations.
According to INSTAT figures, during 2024, the number of passengers who traveled by air reached 10 million 708 thousand passengers. This increase is also reflected in the revenues that the state budget collects from the "service fee for crossing the border by plane."
Detailed data from the General Directorate of Taxes show that during 2024, around 5 million euros were collected from this fee, an increase of 40.4 percent compared to the previous year, where revenues were recorded at around 3.6 million euros.
But what is the plane fee and how is it paid? In 2014, the Ministry of Finance imposed a 10 euro fee for crossing the border by plane, which was directly reflected in the pockets of citizens because it brought an immediate increase in ticket prices.
Meanwhile, in April 2022, the government decided to reduce the air border crossing fee of the Republic of Albania, widely known as the flight tax, from 10 euros to 1 euro. The decision was directly reflected in the drop in ticket prices for citizens.
Each airline, at the time of ticket sale, must add this fee to its value and reflect it in the total. Tirana International Airport is the entity responsible for collecting this fee and then transferring it to the account of the regional tax directorate.
