3.7 million lek fines for data abuse - Commissioner, 16 decisions and 20 recommendations in 2024
Albanian citizens are becoming more and more aware every day when it comes to protecting their personal data and preventing privacy violations.
During 2024, the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection has taken 16 penalizing decisions on entities of various categories regarding the misuse of citizens' data.
A good part of the investigations have started from complaints made by the latter themselves.
The decisions mainly relate to data collection and failure to comply with the law regarding specific deadlines regarding the retention period of personal data, for the documentation it administers in function of the activity it carries out, but also other issues.
Specifically, the decisions are in the education sectors, mainly private schools, in the financial sector, in preschool education, in the private postal service, in the field of communication and telecommunications, in the software production sector, social media marketing, etc.
The value of administrative measures imposed against public and private entities amounts to around 3.7 million lek. The maximum fine reaches up to 460 thousand lek per entity depending on the violations committed and the minimum is 40 thousand lek.
On the other hand, 20 recommendations have also been given to entities in the fields of education, hospitality, communication and various state institutions on respecting legal obligations in the context of personal data protection.
