"Arab" fiscal tracking for imported goods - Cooperation agreement signed with the United Arab Emirates
In addition to the agreement on the underwater energy connection between Albania and Italy, an agreement was also signed in Abu Dhabi to establish a Securities Agency between the United Arab Emirates and Albania.
This agreement aims to improve and modernize fiscal processes, as well as strengthen the monitoring of imported goods, an important step towards increasing transparency and efficiency in international trade.
In particular, this initiative comes at a time when the volume of imported goods in Albania is increasing, bringing new challenges, including the increased risk of smuggling.
Ministry of Interior data show that last year (Chart 1) around 267 cases of smuggling were registered, a figure that marks an increase of around 22% compared to 2023.
According to publications by the Customs Administration, the sector most affected by these illegal activities includes alcoholic beverages and clothing, which are often sold by local traders.
This increase in smuggling cases highlights the need for stronger surveillance measures and improved customs control infrastructure.
