18 solar power plants enter production - The share of photovoltaic energy increases, the capacity of new plants is 255.95 MW
18 photovoltaic power plants entered production during 2024, contributing to the growth of solar energy in the country. According to data published by the Energy Regulatory Authority, the installed capacity of new plants is 255.95 MW, while together with existing plants, the total capacity reaches 449 MW. Most of the plants that entered production during the past year are small, with a capacity of 2 MW, but there is also a lack of large plants with a power of 20 - 100 MW.
In total, during the past year, all solar sources produced about 489 thousand MWh of energy or 6.25% of the amount produced by all generating sources. These data show that the share of solar energy produced in the country has increased significantly during 2024, compared to 2023, given that a year earlier it accounted for almost 1% of total energy, with about 80,874 MWh of energy produced.
Meanwhile, the largest share is held by the Karavasta Power Plant, which has produced 53% of total solar energy, while photovoltaics in the free market generated about 32% of the total.
The increase in the share of solar energy is important in terms of diversifying energy production sources, as our country is dependent on hydropower sources. Currently, according to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, there are 38 solar power plants in production.
