Albanians "gave up" on fuel, alcohol and tobacco - 2024 marked a record in consumption, tourism played a key role
2024 has set a record in the last 5 years in terms of import and consumption of excise goods, such as fuel, beer, and cigarettes.
Official data from the Ministry of Finance show that over the past 12 months, Albanian citizens and tourists have consumed around 657.5 thousand tons of fuel. Compared to a year ago, the import of this product has increased by around 43 thousand tons.
This performance comes as a result of the increase in the flow of tourists in our country, a figure which is recorded at 11.7 million in 2024, where a good part of them come with personal vehicles and some rent vehicles to visit as many places as possible. Also, tourists are not concentrated only in the summer season but there has been a high flow throughout the year.
On the other hand, there is also a growing trend of Albanian citizens traveling on weekends regardless of the season, taking advantage of the good climatic conditions that the country offers.
An indicator of this flow is the increase in beer imports, where in 12 months, approximately 59.4 thousand tons have entered the Albanian market, with a significant increase from year to year.
But in addition to the role that tourism plays in the import of this product, the purchase of significant quantities from abroad has also been favored by the unification of excise duty for domestic production, which has brought a disadvantage to factories operating in Albania, which are facing high costs and numerous difficulties, but on the other hand has created more ground for importers.
Meanwhile, despite the annual price increase due to the excise tax calendar, it seems that Albanian citizens are not giving up cigarettes. Tobacco imports have reached 3,194 tons, the highest figure in the last 5 years.
The figures also confirm that Albanians are coffee lovers and growing. In 2024, 8,680 were imported, also the highest figure in the last 3 years.
Excise revenue during the past year amounted to 63.4 billion lek, 5 billion lek or 8.6% more than the same period in 2023.
