Albanian producers face the rejection of agricultural products at the border, their return or disposal, due to the lack of quality and standards, causing them great economic loss as well as undermining Albania's objective to reach 1 billion euros in agricultural exports in 2030. .

In a decade, specifically during the period 2010 - 2020, referring to the analysis of rejections of Albanian products at the border, undertaken by UNIDO, more than half of the total rejections (58%) came from the EU market, while China constituted a their third (31%). 

The second National Forum on Quality and Standards 2024 organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with the Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation addressed the challenges faced by these businesses to meet international standards as well as the measures that are being taken to strengthen the quality infrastructure, with the aim of increasing exports and expanding the map where "Made in Albania" products go.

"In order to make the best use of the potential of Albanian agriculture, we must address the challenges related to compatibility, taking into account the strengthening of the infrastructure. Albania can increase the competitiveness of its products and safety for consumers. Refusals at the border is a critical issue to address through strengthening the relevant infrastructure. UNIDO has a 15-year track record of raising standards in many countries. UNIDO's quality infrastructure development strategy goes towards sustainable development. We need to see quality infrastructure as a platform to find solutions. Healthy quality infrastructure will be a powerful instrument to achieve the ambitious objectives that Albania has set for Albanian citizens".

The Global Quality and Standards Program (GSQP) in Albania, supported by the Swiss government through the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and implemented by UNIDO, is assisting small and medium producers in the country to increase the quality and standards of their products. them, in order to access the European and wider markets, as well as to avoid rejections at the border.

 "This forum is an important step in the joint work to support the economy of Albania and also opens new economic opportunities by creating a new field for Albanian products to flourish in the European markets, therefore it is important for Albania to ensure quality infrastructure which will strengthen and competitiveness which will bring more volumes of exports. For agriculture and producers, quality must be maintained, while quantity is also required. For the government, the challenge is to build quality infrastructure and control mechanisms.

"Quality and standards are not simply about requirements, but affect economic growth and social equality. The joint initiative by UNIDO and SECO is a program that works all over the world to strengthen the capacities of SMEs and to facilitate their access to markets both at the country level and at the global level".

The Forum brought together over 200 participants from a diverse spectrum of stakeholders encouraging collaboration to improve Quality Infrastructure in light of technological advancements and market dynamics. The Global Quality and Standards Program (GQSP) is a broad initiative that supports 14 countries around the world, including Albania.
