The snowstorm brings chaos to the Balkans - Traffic problems, school closures and thousands without electricity!
A snowstorm hit the Balkans on Monday, causing traffic chaos, closing schools and leaving thousands without power.
In Slovenia, bad weather hampered efforts to rescue two Hungarian climbers who went missing in the mountains north of Ljubljana on Sunday, the STA news agency reported.
A rescue mission was suspended overnight due to dangerous conditions, and while it resumed on Monday, a helicopter could not take off due to persistent bad weather.
It is reported that the couple is staying at an altitude of 1700 meters.
"We are getting closer, but I don't think we can finish before the evening," said Jernej Lanišek, who heads the rescue mission. About 40 rescuers have joined the effort, he added.
In nearby Croatia and Bosnia, people were asked not to travel. Traffic was halted in the Adriatic country's central Lika region, while schools were closed in northwestern Bosnia due to heavy snow.
Nearly 200,000 homes experienced power outages and trucks and other heavy vehicles were stopped on many roads. Motorists were warned to exercise a "high level of caution" and not travel without winter gear.
Ferry services have been canceled along the Croatian coast.
The snowstorm is expected to move into Serbia, where meteorologists warned people in western parts of the country to avoid travel and prepare for possible power outages.
