Serbia heads to elections - Vučić sets October 25 for early parliamentary race
Serbia will hold early parliamentary elections on October 25, announced President Aleksandar Vučić, who is expected to run for the post of prime minister.
The elections come at a tense political moment, following months of mass student-led protests against the government and corruption. Protesters are demanding accountability for the fatal train accident at the Novi Sad train station in November 2024, which killed 16 people.
The student movement is expected to participate in the elections and is seen as the main challenger to Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party, SNS. A list of 250 candidates has been prepared, and the names are expected to be made public after the official announcement of the elections.
Vučić, whose second and final presidential term ends in May 2027, has stated that he will step down from the presidency after fulfilling certain state obligations.
The SNS currently controls 129 of the 250 seats in parliament and governs in coalition with the Socialist Party of Serbia.
The elections also come at a crucial time for Serbia's relations with the European Union. The accession process has stalled due to concerns over democracy, the rule of law, media freedom and the fight against corruption, while Belgrade maintains close ties with Russia and China.
