Serbia, gas interconnection with North Macedonia - Belgrade will invest around 153 million euros in the project

Serbia will invest around 153 million euros in the construction of a 1.5 billion cubic meter natural gas interconnection with North Macedonia. The project is part of broader efforts to diversify energy sources, Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said.
The permit for the construction of the 144 km section of the gas connection on the territory of Serbia is expected to be obtained in mid-2026, and works are planned to begin immediately after that, Djedovic Handanovic said. The statement came after a meeting in Belgrade with North Macedonia's Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, Sanja Bozhinovska.
Djedovic Handanovic also stated that the goal is for the entire connection to be completed by the end of 2027 and become operational in early 2028. The Macedonian section of the gas connection will be 23 km long, according to a separate statement from Skopje.
The construction of the gas connection will enable Serbia to connect to the Southern Gas Corridor, as well as the transmission of gas from Greece, through North Macedonia, and further towards Europe, local media in Belgrade quoted.
The governments of Serbia and North Macedonia signed a memorandum of understanding for the gas connection in October 2024. Earlier this year, Serbia's natural gas importer and distributor, Srbijagas, and North Macedonia's gas transmission company, Nomagas, signed a memorandum to advance the planned project.
Serbia currently receives most of its gas from Russia's Gazprom via TurkStream in Bulgaria, as well as smaller amounts from Azerbaijan. The country also plans to build a 1.6 billion cubic meter gas link with Romania.
In July, North Macedonia, which imports all of its gas from Gazprom via Bulgaria, began construction of a section of a gas connection with Greece.
