34 million euros for the energy network - Montenegro aims to modernize the

Montenegro intends to invest 33.8 million euros in the energy efficiency of public buildings and the modernization of the energy distribution network. The activities are planned to last from the first quarter of 2025 until April 30, 2030.

Investments in energy renewal and the electricity distribution network are part of the project Decarbonization of the Energy Sector in Montenegro. The funds for its implementation will be provided by a loan of 31 million euros from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and 2.8 million euros from the state budget.

Energy efficiency measures will be implemented in 23 buildings, 16 belonging to the University of Montenegro, six run by administrative authorities and one in the health sector. The Ministry of Energy will be in charge and the total value of the activities is calculated at 10.8 million euros, of which 8 million are from the loan and 2.8 million from the state budget, according to the data.

Budgetary means for energy renovation will come from savings in energy consumption in 23 renovated facilities, within the current project Energy Efficiency in Montenegro with the help of the World Bank.

The goal of network investments is to increase system reliability, integrate renewable energy and reduce technical losses.

The first part is the reconstruction of seven 35 kV (kilovolt) facilities in substations Pljevlja 1, Nikšić, Tivat, Ulcin, Budva, Tivar and Berane. Another priority is the replacement and modernization of 42 transformers in 27 substations, while the third is a pilot investment to improve the distribution network.

The pilot investment envisages the installation of smart meters and sensors in the low voltage network, as well as specialized software and a programming interface for the integration of the new equipment with the data management system. The Montenegrin distribution system operator CEDIS is responsible for investments worth 21 million euros.
