Energy price increase, Pristina prepares for protests - ERO: From April 1, electricity will be 15 percent more expensive
On Saturday, April 5, a protest will be held in Pristina against the increase in electricity prices. Activists and citizens have announced that they will gather at Skanderbeg Square to express their opposition to the 15 percent increase in electricity tariffs.
The protest was organized by the group 'Not a Cent More', which has stated that the high energy bill is a heavy burden on Kosovar families, and further worsens their livelihoods.
A few days ago, even opposition parties came out against the decision to increase energy prices.
The Democratic Party of Kosovo has assessed that the current government, in the name of market liberalization, is favoring a small group of energy traders, placing the heaviest burden on Kosovar families and businesses.
According to this party, the Government must immediately stop this harmful policy and take concrete steps to protect consumers, otherwise the decision will be sent for judgment to the Constitutional Court. Ramush Haradinaj, on behalf of AAK, has also stated that 'Increasing energy tariffs is a blow to citizens and enrichment for Kurti's clique'.
According to the Kosovo Energy Regulatory Office, the 15% increase in energy prices has become 100% based on inflation but also on the fact that Kosovo still remains at the bottom of the list of countries with the cheapest electricity prices. According to this office, the price increase is necessary to cover import costs.
According to the decision taken, increased energy prices will be applied in Kosovo from April 1st.
