External debt "inflates" by 139 million euros - BoA: Short-term debt,

Albania's gross external debt has reached 10,142 million euros. The latest data from the Bank of Albania shows a 1.4% increase in its stock at the end of 2024.

According to official statistics, at the end of December 2024, gross external debt was at 41.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), up from 40.9% at the end of the third quarter.

About 7.2 billion or 71% of the external debt is in euros, while only 10% is in US dollars. Almost 88% of the total debt is long-term debt, while 12% is short-term debt. Specifically, long-term external debt is estimated at 8.9 billion lek and short-term at almost 1.1 billion lek, with a decrease compared to the third quarter.

In terms of long-term external debt by instrument, loans continue to lead at 48% of the total. On the other hand, financial instruments in the form of currency and deposits, as well as trade credits and advances account for 30% and 49% of the short-term debt stock, respectively.

But who are the creditors of Albania's external debt?

According to Bank of Albania statistics, public creditors, i.e. loans from international financial institutions, hold the largest share of the long-term external debt stock. Portfolio investments of private banks and government, as well as loans from private banks and other private institutions, constitute 14% and 15% of the long-term external debt, respectively.
