Britain's hottest summer ever recorded/Global warming has significantly

The UK has experienced its hottest summer since official measurements began in 1884 and is now at risk of experiencing the same conditions more often due to human-caused climate change, according to the Met Office.

In recent years, countries around the world have experienced extreme heat due to global warming, with the summer of 2024 already considered the hottest globally on record.

In Europe, scorching heat waves this summer have helped spread deadly wildfires in countries like Spain and Portugal.

The summer months of June, July and August in Britain saw an average temperature of 16.10 degrees Celsius, beating the previous record of 15.76°C set in 2018, the Met Office said. The summer of 2025 was 1.51°C above the long-term climate average.

"Our analysis shows that the summer of 2025 has become much more likely in the future, due to the greenhouse gases that humans have released since the Industrial Revolution," say researchers at the Met Office.

"Today it is entirely possible to experience much hotter summers. What was previously considered extreme is now becoming increasingly normal in our changing climate," they explain.

Britain has experienced four heatwaves this summer, with the highest temperature recorded at 35.8°C in Faversham, southeast England. This was lower than the country's all-time record of 40.3°C, set in the summer of 2022.
