Spain, record 94 million visitors last year - Government predicts increase in

Spain expects even more tourists to flock to the country in 2025, after an estimated 94 million foreigners visited last year, 10% more than in 2023, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

Foreign tourists spent about 126 billion euros ($130 billion) during their stay in 2024, 16% more than a year earlier, the ministry said.

According to official sources, visitors are expected to spend 36 billion euros in the first four months of 2025, also 16% more than in the same period in 2024, while the number of visitors will increase by 9%.

The tourism boom has become a source of tension in many visitor hotspots across the country, with cities like Barcelona planning to close all short-term rentals by 2028 to protect locals from rising housing costs.

The Spanish government is working to mitigate the tourist influx, citing progress in establishing rules and restrictions on rental accommodation for tourists.

"We must insist on the deconcentration of tourism and this is happening," ministry officials said, adding that environmentally sustainable tourism in Spain is being consolidated.

In October last year, the Bank of Spain said in a report that although most tourism-related indicators were recording consecutive records, their growth was slowing.

The bank also warned of problems related to overcrowded tourism, degradation of natural resources and housing, and called for a study regarding the possible increase in tourism fees.
