Advantages and disadvantages of submarine cables - Study/ Energy line with Italy brings more flexibility to Albania
From the traditional transmission of electricity through poles to underwater cables. The agreement signed between Albania, Italy and the United Arab Emirates for the construction of a renewable energy interconnection line will mark the first project of this kind for our country.
According to a study published by the "New York Times", regarding underwater interconnection lines, the advantages and disadvantages of implementing this project are listed.
One of the main benefits that these projects offer compared to transporting electricity traditionally, through tunnels and underground cables, is the greater flexibility they offer.
Furthermore, building underwater cables avoids the need to erect large power towers and cut down trees, a process that can often cause strong opposition from environmental groups and create environmental problems. The report also notes that, in some cases, laying underwater cables can be less expensive.
On the other hand, the report mentions that these projects require significant technological development. However, in the case of the agreement signed in Abu Dhabi, the intervention of the United Arab Emirates, a technologically advanced country, is not expected to pose a problem for Albania.
Another disadvantage associated with these projects is the environmental impact they may have. Laying underwater cables can cause environmental concerns, such as the turbidity of industrialized chemicals that may be present at the bottom of rivers or lakes, or the impact on the habitats of certain fish species.
If this project involves underwater crossings, it will be necessary to manage potential environmental impacts.
Italy will become the 5th country that Albania will have the opportunity to connect to through the cross-border electricity distribution line, after Kosovo, Montenegro, Greece and North Macedonia. The connection with North Macedonia is currently in the implementation phase.
