The Dutch government avoids collapse after the resignation of the secretary of state!
The Dutch government dominated by far-right leader Geert Wilders has survived - for now - a government crisis that centered on the resignation of the finance secretary.
Moroccan-born Nora Achahbar of the centrist New Social Contract party said she had heard racist comments in the cabinet about immigrants after Israeli fans were attacked after a soccer match in Amsterdam.
Last week, Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders blamed Moroccans for the violence, claiming "we saw Muslims shooting Jews" and adding that it was instigated by "Moroccans who want to destroy the Jews".
Wilders said those convicted of involvement should be deported if they hold dual citizenship.
On Friday, Moroccan-born Nora Achahbar of the centrist New Social Contract party announced her resignation as finance secretary.
She said, "polarizing behavior has had such an impact on me that I could, or would no longer, fulfill my role as secretary of state."
In a statement, Achahbar wrote "polarization in society is dangerous because it undermines the connection between people. Because of this, we begin to see each other as adversaries instead of fellow citizens."
Prime Minister Dick Schoof said after the resignation that among the four coalition parties "we saw that we wanted to continue" and denied there was racism involved in the talks and among top coalition officials.
While politicians condemned anti-Semitism and agreed that the perpetrators of the violence should be prosecuted and given harsh sentences, opposition lawmakers accused Geert Wilders of inflaming the situation.
Wilders, whose party became the largest in last year's election, also sowed some dissent within the four-party coalition with his comments.
Green-Left-Socialist opposition leader Frans Timmermans praised Achahbar even before any action was announced. "In this government, racist comments are the order of the day. This government is not for all Dutch people," he said.
Violence broke out in the Dutch capital before and after last week's soccer match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Fans from both sides were involved in riots.
According to a 12-page report, a number of Maccabi fans chanted anti-Arab slogans and removed a Palestinian flag from a building, while several men carried out hit-and-run attacks on Maccabi fans and people they thought that they were Jews. violence unleashed by the Amsterdam authorities. Five people were treated in hospital and police made at least 60 arrests.
