Basket products in Europe - Which cities have the highest prices?
The prices of the basket reflect significant inequalities across European cities, even between those in the same country. The Deutsche Bank Research Institute's "Basket Index" reveals the European countries where these products will be most expensive in 2025.
It is calculated using weighted prices of everyday food items, including milk, bread, eggs, fruit and meat from Numbeo data. Each city is given a score, with New York City as the baseline for comparison, set at 100. The index does not take into account purchasing power, which is an important factor when comparing cities.
Geneva tops the list as the most expensive city globally. Its index score is 106, meaning food prices are 6% higher than in New York. Another Swiss city, Zurich, ranks as the second most expensive in Europe with a score of 103. These are the only European cities more expensive than New York.
Following them in Europe are Oslo (78), Paris (71) and Luxembourg (66). While significantly cheaper than New York and Swiss cities, they are in the top five on the old continent.
Many European cities have food price scores between 58 and 63, which can be considered average. These include: Helsinki, Vienna and Copenhagen (with 63), Milan (62), London (62), as well as Amsterdam, Munich and Stockholm (with 58 points).
The least expensive group includes cities with index scores of 55 and below. Among them, Budapest and Warsaw (both 37) are the cheapest European cities on the list. This means that a basket of groceries that costs €100 in New York would cost just €37 in the capitals of Hungary and Poland (63% cheaper). Globally, Cairo scores the lowest with just 20 points.
