The number of employees reaches a historical record - Germany records the

In 2024, Germany reached a record 46.1 million employed, up 72,000 from the previous year. This growth was helped by immigrants and higher participation of the local population, with the service sector making the main contribution.

In 2024, Germany had about 46.1 million people employed on an annual average, the highest number since the country's reunification, the statistics office announced.

The average number of people employed last year increased by 72,000 compared to 2023, according to official sources.

With the exception of the pandemic year 2020, the number of employees has increased continuously since 2006. However, the growth rate has slowed significantly since mid-2022.

The increase of 72,000 people employed in 2024 follows a larger increase of 622,000 in 2022 and 336,000 in 2023, data from the statistics office showed.

As in previous years, the increase in employment in 2024 was due to the emigration of foreign workers and the higher labor force participation of the local population. According to sources, these two contributions offset the mitigating effects of demographic changes.

The services sector has been the only contributor to the increase in the total number of employed persons in 2024, with 75.5% of the total working in this sector.

In industry, the number of people employed fell by 50,000 and the number of workers in the construction industry fell by 28,000, official data showed.
