Cars in the EU, at a new record - Sales of electric vehicles for the first time exceed those with internal combustion engines

Sales of fully electric cars in the European Union surpassed those of internal combustion vehicles for the first time in December, even as policymakers proposed easing emissions regulations.
Registrations of battery-electric cars, a gauge of sales, also surpassed those of petrol cars in the wider European market, which includes Britain and Norway, as car sales on the continent marked a sixth month of year-on-year growth.
Competition from Chinese brands such as BYD, Changan and Geely is intensifying the race for the European market, even as domestic carmakers such as Volkswagen and BMW launch new electric models.
The EU unveiled a plan in December to abandon an effective 2035 ban on internal combustion engine cars, bowing to pressure from carmakers as they face challenges from Chinese rivals, U.S. import tariffs and difficulties in selling electric vehicles profitably.
However, experts expect electric vehicles to continue to grow their share of the European market. They say European brands are starting to adapt by introducing new, affordable electric vehicles, while individual countries are offering new incentive schemes.
Overall registrations in Europe, Britain and the European Free Trade Association for Volkswagen and Stellantis rose by 10.2% and 4.5%, respectively, in December, while they fell by 2.2% for Renault. Tesla registrations fell by 20.2% during the month, while BYD's rose by 229.7%.
Total car sales in the EU rose by almost 6% in December. Sales in the EU, Britain and the European Free Trade Association rose by 7.6% to 1.2 million cars in December and by 2.4% to 13.3 million in total in 2025, reaching their highest volumes in five years, although they remained well below pre-pandemic levels.
Total car sales in the EU rose by 5.8% to almost one million vehicles in December and by 1.8% to 10.8 million for the year. December registrations of battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid electric cars rose by 51%, 36.7% and 5.8% respectively, together accounting for 67% of the bloc's registrations.
