Croatia raises energy targets for 2030 - The country aims to cover 43% of total

Croatia increased all the most important targets in the updated National Energy and Climate Plan for the period 2021-2030. Renewable sources in energy consumption increased from 36% to 42.5%.

The member states of the European Union are drawing up national energy and climate plans with the main aim of increasing green resources and reducing emissions.

The main reasons for updating the plans in Croatia are the increased climate ambitions of the EU for the period up to 2030 and the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the authors of the document noted.

According to the draft, the country has adopted more ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. The target for reducing greenhouse gases from 2005 levels in sectors under the EU Emissions Trading System was strengthened from 43% to at least 62%. The target for sectors outside this system was at least 7% in the previous version, while now it is projected at 16.7%.

The renewable energy target in gross energy consumption is 42.5%, or 6.1 percentage points above the previous target. The target for renewables in transport almost doubled, from 13.2% to 24.6%.

The primary energy consumption target for 2030 was reduced from 344.38 to 336.9 petajoules, compared to the reduction in projected direct energy consumption from 286.91 to 246.2 petajoules. This means Croatia aims to save more energy through energy efficiency measures, according to the final update.

A few weeks ago, the Croatian Energy Market Operator launched a procedure that offers incentive tariffs for electricity produced from renewable sources.
