Croatia, with its "eyes" on nuclear energy - Aims to cover 30% of

Croatia aims to cover at least 30% of its electricity needs with energy from nuclear sources by 2040, the energy minister said, after presenting the draft law on the development of nuclear energy in the country to the government.

Nuclear energy is a strategic choice: a reliable, sustainable and low-carbon foundation for the future Croatian energy system and a strong guarantor of its sustainability in the decades to come, the ministry added.

According to the draft law published on the government's website, to achieve its energy goals, Croatia will remain involved in exploring opportunities to extend the operating license of the Krsko nuclear power plant and to build more nuclear capacity, such as small modular nuclear reactors.

The draft law sets out the legislative framework for the development of nuclear energy in the country. The specific locations for future nuclear power capacities will be determined by other laws.

Croatia and neighboring Slovenia co-own the Krsko nuclear power plant, which supplies about 16% of Croatia's energy needs. The Krsko plant, built in 1983, is expected to cease operation in 2043. The plant has a single pressurized water reactor with a gross electrical output of 730 MW, enabling the production of approximately 5,700 GWh of electricity per year.

The Slovenian government said it plans to adopt a national spatial plan for the construction of a second power plant unit in the second half of 2028.
