Albania, in the global internet race/ How fast will we navigate the digital world in 2026?

Internet speed is today considered one of the most important indicators of a country's level of digitalization and technological development. It directly affects the way citizens communicate, work, study or develop their businesses online. But how much progress has Albania made in this regard?
According to the latest index published by global internet speed measurement company Ookla, Albania ranks 45th in the world for mobile internet speed. The average recorded speed is around 116.6 Mbps. There is no significant improvement or deterioration in this indicator compared to 2025.
Meanwhile, the situation appears somewhat more positive for fixed internet. Albania ranks 69th in the world, marking an improvement of 5 places in the ranking. The average fixed internet speed in the country is estimated at around 93.3 Mbps.
But how does the situation look at the global and regional level?
According to published data, the United Arab Emirates tops the rankings for mobile internet speeds, dominating both download and upload speeds. They are followed by Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, countries that have invested heavily in 5G networks and advanced technologies.
A surprise in the ranking is Bulgaria, which leads Europe in mobile internet speed and ranks among the top five countries in the world for this indicator.
As for fixed internet, Singapore tops the list, followed by the United Arab Emirates and France, countries known for their highly developed digital infrastructure.
On the other side of the ranking, the reality is more challenging for some countries such as Bolivia, Syria and Cuba, which are positioned at the bottom of the list due to limited infrastructure and economic or political factors. Meanwhile, in the region, the country with the lowest speed was Bosnia & Herzegovina. In summary, Albania is in an average position globally, with stability in mobile internet and slight improvement in fixed internet.
