Strikes "paralyze" Italy - Unions protest budget plans by blocking

Travelers heading to Italy could face delays and disruption as a national general strike has been called for November 28. Both the public and private sectors are expected to take part. The strike will last 24 hours and will affect intercity trains, local transport, ferries, airports and other means of transport.

Italy's largest unions have also announced a 21-hour general strike on December 12, which will disrupt rail services and add to planned strikes in the ferry and aviation sectors next month.

The strike on December 12 is scheduled to take place from midnight to 9 p.m., according to the transport ministry's strike bulletin. The unions are opposing the government's budget plans, which they see as cuts that harm workers and public services.

Many organizations have called for a mass mobilization on November 28, demanding more investment in health, education and other essential services, as well as cuts in military spending. They say the government's fiscal plan cuts funding for public services and leaves many long-expired national labor contracts unresolved. Unions argue that staff shortages, high living costs and protracted negotiations have put enormous pressure on schools, hospitals and other essential services.

When the strike was announced in November, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the timing, suggesting that unions were seeking to create an extended weekend. On November 28, intercity and regional trains, public transport, ferries and possibly even air links could operate on reduced schedules or be canceled altogether.

The biggest impact of the December 12 strike is expected on the railways. Intercity and high-speed train services across Italy could be cancelled or reduced, affecting major lines such as Rome-Milan, Florence and Turin.

December is a busy travel period, so cancellations can cause major road closures. Flights are not directly affected by the strike, and Italy's airports are expected to operate normally. However, travelers arriving by plane may face disruptions to rail transport if schedules change.

On December 17, a 4-hour strike from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, involving ground service workers, flight crews and air traffic controllers for Rome's airspace, could cause delays at the country's airports.
