Greece, around 19,500 new jobs in the administration - In focus, health, defense, education and infrastructure
Greece's government cabinet has approved the creation of 19,489 new jobs in the public sector for 2026. According to the Interior Ministry, the focus will be on healthcare, the defense sector, local government, education, justice and infrastructure.
The government aims to improve the functioning of public administration and better meet citizens' needs in key services. The decision comes at a time when Greece is facing major demographic challenges and new needs following the pandemic crisis.
The National Health System will benefit from 5,228 new positions, mainly for doctors, nurses and medical staff. The Ministry of Defense and military schools will benefit from 1,517 new jobs, while municipalities will expand staff in technical services, cleaning and the veterinary sector.
Fire and civil defense units, police and specialized security personnel will also be reinforced. According to authorities, the aim is to increase preparedness for dealing with natural emergencies, such as fires and floods, which have increased in recent years.
Additional hiring is also planned in the education sector, judicial bodies, transport authorities, as well as tax and labor inspection agencies.
The cabinet has also approved a bonus program worth 40 million euros for public administration employees, including local government staff.
Bonuses will be linked to the achievement of government objectives and can reach up to 15% of annual salary, which in some cases is as much as an additional monthly salary.
