Germany, record trade deficit with China - Expected to reach 87 billion euros.

Germany is expected to record a record trade deficit of 87 billion euros with China this year, according to a forecast by the state agency for promoting the international economy Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI).

The value of the deficit between exports and imports will exceed the record of 2022, which was just over 84 billion euros, the report says. “Of course, this imbalance is not in our interest,” explained an agency official.

Due to changes in trade dynamics caused by US President Donald Trump's tariffs, China regained its place as Germany's largest trading partner during the first eight months of 2025. It had held this position for eight years, until it was surpassed by the United States in 2024.

However, Berlin aims to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on Beijing for critical products such as chips and rare earth minerals. The country's goal is to make its economy less exposed to trade tensions and logistical and transportation concerns.

On the one hand, the trade imbalance is due to weak German exports to China, which are expected to shrink by more than 11% this year. “China is losing ground in the customer market. This year, it is likely to rank only sixth, behind Italy,” agency officials said. A few years ago, China was in second place, behind the United States.

On the other hand, more Chinese products are entering Europe's largest economy, also due to high US tariffs. Chinese data for the January-September period showed that exports to the US fell by 17%, while shipments to Germany rose by 11%.
