How much money will go to the army in 2026? The Ministry of Defense receives the highest priority in funding

Based on the draft budget for 2026, the "Ministry of Defense" this year will have 58.9 billion lek available, or 10 billion lek more than last year. The increase expressed in percentage terms is estimated at 20%. It seems that this ministry has received the highest priority in funding, also based on the increase, which is the largest among the main institutions.
This increase in the fund is also reflected in the weight of the budget dedicated to this ministry compared to GDP. This year, the fund accounts for almost 2.36% of GDP, while last year it was lower.
We recall that at the summit held in The Hague, the objective to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2034 was approved. Albania has adapted to NATO's new request and has agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product.
The Ministry of Defense is focused on fulfilling the initiated reforms and the constitutional duties of the Armed Forces, as well as international commitments within NATO and regional cooperation. Through the planned budget, it is aimed to modernize military capacities and infrastructure, improve working environments and equip the forces with modern weaponry compatible with Alliance standards.
The Ministry also aims to increase the engagement of the Armed Forces in NATO operations and new international initiatives, as well as strengthen national defense readiness, coping with crises and civil emergencies. A special priority remains the elevation of the military figure, through career policies, increased transparency, accountability and the fight against corruption in the ranks of the Armed Forces.
