They want reunification with the EU - 3 in 5 Britons of Generation Z would like a new vote
A generation of young Britons who were excluded from the 2016 referendum because of their age now believe Brexit has failed, with a majority calling for a new vote to rejoin the EU, polls show. Britons of Generation Z are deeply unhappy with the UK leaving the EU, according to a survey of 18- to 28-year-olds by thinktank More in Common.
The data shows that 60% of this group would vote to rejoin the bloc if given the chance, compared to 9% who would vote to stay out. When the results are filtered to focus only on those who might cast a ballot in a hypothetical second referendum, the gap becomes stark, with the pro-EU camp wanting to stay/rejoin the EU taking 81% of the vote compared to just 19% for staying out.
The “More in Common” study, which surveyed 440 young people across the UK, shows that 50% of Gen Z Britons categorize Brexit as a failure. In contrast, only 16% see the project as a success, while 34% remain undecided.
While there is a consensus that the current situation is not working, young Britons are divided on whether the project was conceptually flawed or was ruined by the political class. Some 37% believe Brexit could have worked well but was “ruined by politicians” who mishandled it, while 29% argue that the project “never would have worked” from the start.
Only 11% claim that Brexit has worked well so far, and 23% expressed no opinion.
