Britain could save £5bn a year on energy - Removing gas plants from the market will lower bills for households, businesses
The British government could save energy users up to £5 billion a year by reforming the electricity market. The reform would prevent wholesale power prices from being set by gas-fired power plants, a former energy official has said.
Britain relies on gas plants for around a quarter of its annual electricity, but they play an even bigger role during periods of low wind and solar generation.
The research report states that removing these plants from the market could lead to a reduction in energy bills for households by £1.7 billion per year by 2028. While energy costs for businesses and industry could fall by £3.3 billion per year. According to the document, gas-fired power plants should be kept as a strategic reserve and used only when needed, without constantly influencing the market price.
“Removing gas from the energy market is a radical step, but these are radical times. The government has very few options to reduce bills, and none of them have benefits as high as our proposal,” says one of the report’s authors and a former senior energy sector official.
The United Kingdom has one of the highest energy prices compared to other developed economies. Although it is increasingly sourcing energy from low-cost renewable sources, gas-fired generation continues to keep overall prices high.
This is because in the British market, the price is determined by the most expensive source of power generation available, usually gas-fired power plants.
In this system, the market price is determined by gas in 98% of cases, according to an academic study published in 2023. This is the highest percentage in Europe and well above the EU average, which is less than 40%.
