EU, solar energy surpassed coal in 2024 - Wind generation reduced, despite

Solar power surpassed coal in total European Union generation for the first time last year, while wind generation declined, according to data from energy think tank Ember.

The EU is seeking to increase renewable energy production as part of efforts to cut emissions and meet climate targets, as well as cut dependence on fossil fuel imports.

Solar generation provided 11% of total electricity in the EU in 2024, up from 9.3% in 2023, overtaking coal, which fell below 10% for the first time since Ember began collecting figures in 2011.

“Over the past two years, we have seen a sharp decline in both coal and gas in the EU energy system. Also, fossil fuels are now at a historic low,” the report’s authors noted.

Power generation from gas fell to 15.7%, from 16.9% in 2023, while wind power remained almost unchanged at 17.4%.

Although about 13 gigawatts (GW) of new wind capacity was added in 2024, conditions were less favorable than in 2023, leading to lower than expected generation.

The EU wants wind power to make up around 34% of its electricity mix by 2030. The report stresses that more action is needed, particularly to facilitate permits for new projects, to meet the goal.

Nuclear remained the dominant provider of electricity in the EU, increasing to 23.7% from 23% in 2023.
