Personalized cancer treatment in 48 hours? Trump's $500 billion plan sparks hope and debate
US President Donald Trump unveiled a $500 billion artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure project at the White House alongside business leaders who said the initiative could cure cancer.
The project, called Stargate, was launched by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle to deliver new technology with the help of large data centers based in Texas.
Donald Trump said: "These world-leading technology giants are announcing the formation of Stargate. So put that name in your books, because I think you're going to hear a lot about it in the future, a new American company that's going to invest at least $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States."
Giving credit to Donald Trump, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said "we wouldn't be able to do this without you, Mr. President." He said: "We're going to see diseases being cured at an unprecedented rate. You're going to be amazed at how quickly we're curing this cancer and that and heart disease."
The Oracle CEO detailed the health benefits of the project, saying: "Little fragments of those [cancer] tumors float around in your blood. So you can do early detection of cancer. If you can do that using AI, you can do early detection of cancer with a blood test and using AI to look at the blood test."
"Once we find the gene sequence of that cancer tumor, then you can vaccinate the person to design a vaccine for each individual person that vaccinates them against that cancer. That mRNA vaccine, you can do it robotically, again using AI, in about 48 hours."
The project is likely to create about 100,000 new jobs and will "secure the future of technology" in the US, Donald Trump said. It will involve an investment of $100 billion a year, which could increase to $500 billion during Donald Trump's four years in office. Initially, the project will operate in Texas, but will be expanded further.
