Trump imposes tariffs on Canada, Mexico, China - US starts trade war, while

US President Donald Trump's new 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada took effect on Tuesday, along with a doubling of tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%, setting off new trade conflicts with the US's three main trading partners.

The tariff actions, which affect nearly $2.2 trillion in annual bilateral trade with the United States, began hours after Trump said the countries had failed in their efforts to stem the flow of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals into the US.

China responded immediately by announcing additional tariffs of 10-15% on some U.S. imports that will take effect on March 10 and a series of new export restrictions on certain U.S. goods. The duties will include products such as chicken, pork, wheat, corn, cotton, as well as some fruits and vegetables.

Beijing also placed twenty-five American firms under export and investment restrictions for reasons related to national security.

Canada and Mexico, which have enjoyed a virtually tariff-free trading relationship with the US for three decades, are poised to retaliate immediately against their ally.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the country would respond with immediate 25% tariffs on $20.7 billion worth of U.S. imports and another $86.2 billion if Trump's tariffs were still in effect after 21 days. He said Canada would target American beer, wine, whiskey, home appliances and orange juice.

"Tariffs would sever an incredibly successful trading relationship," Trudeau said, adding that they would violate the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement signed by Trump during his first term.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to announce her response during a press conference in Mexico City on Tuesday, the country's economy ministry said.
