Trump targets EU and UK in latest tariff threat!
US President Donald Trump has called the European Union's €300 billion trade deficit with the US an "atrocity", adding that tariffs "will definitely happen" with the European Union and possibly the United Kingdom.
However, he said the situation with the UK "can be resolved", adding that Prime Minister Keir Starmer and he "are getting on very well". He said the EU, however, was "a way out of line".
Trump's comments could further strain relations between the EU and the UK as the British prime minister seeks to reset her relationship with the bloc. Starmer is due to visit Brussels on Monday.
Speaking before Trump's comments and a day before meeting EU leaders in Brussels, Keir Starmer said he would seek a strong trading relationship with the US.
"In the discussions I've had with President Trump, that's what we've been focused on, a strong trade relationship," he said. "So it's very early days."
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday, Trump said that "the United States has been robbed by almost every country in the world."
On Saturday, he signed an order to impose steep tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China.
Trump added that he had a busy weekend dealing with Ukraine and Russia and held discussions with Israel ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the US.
The trade sanctions that Trump signed on Saturday at his Florida resort sparked a mix of panic, anger and uncertainty and threatened to disrupt a decades-old North American trading partnership while further straining relations with China.
He said Americans could feel "some pain" from the escalating trade war caused by his tariffs.
