Trump threatens tariffs on countries doing business with Iran/ Iran: Talks

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday that could impose a 25% tariff on countries doing business with Iran. The order comes as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to rise, even as the two countries engaged in talks this week. The State Department said it was sanctioning 15 entities and 14 ships in a shadowy fleet linked to the illicit trade in Iranian oil, petroleum products and petrochemicals.

Meanwhile in Oman, the two countries are in talks to iron out their differences. Iran's foreign minister said nuclear talks with the US were a "good start" and would continue, allaying concerns that failure to reach a deal could push the Middle East towards war. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said after talks in the Omani capital, Muscat, attended by himself, US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, that "any dialogue requires restraint from threats and pressure. Tehran is only discussing its nuclear issue... We are not discussing any other issue with the US."

Both sides have shown a willingness to revive diplomacy over Tehran's long-running nuclear dispute with the West, with Washington seeking to expand talks to cover Iran's ballistic missiles and "their treatment of their people," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday.

A regional diplomat briefed by Tehran said Iran insisted on "its right to enrich uranium" during negotiations with the US, adding that Tehran's missile capabilities did not come up in the discussions.
