Trump threatens trade tariffs if Europe does not buy more oil and gas from the US!
EU officials today dismissed Donald Trump's latest tariff threat as the US president-elect warned of dire consequences if the bloc does not increase its purchases of US oil and gas.
Trump posted today on his social media platform Truth Social: "I told the European Union that they must fill their enormous deficit with the United States by buying large-scale our oil and gas. Otherwise, it's FEE all the way!!!”
Asked by reporters at a daily press conference in Brussels, European Commission trade spokesman Olof Gill responded to what he described as "frequent comments by the president-elect" on EU-US trade issues.
“[The EU has a significant goods trade surplus with the US, while the US has a significant services trade surplus with the EU, and this is not always reflected in some of the types of posts that you ” referring to,” Gill said.
"So what we want to get at, and what we have said on many occasions, including from the highest level President von der Leyen down, is that we are ready to discuss with President-elect Trump how we can further strengthen an already strong relationship. , including the discussion of our common interests in the energy sector", added the spokesperson.
Europe has sharply increased imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US over the past three years as Brussels seeks to diversify sources of supply away from Russia amid President Vladimir Putin's undeclared war on Ukraine.
According to official EU figures, the US was the single largest source of both oil and non-pipeline gas in the third quarter of this year, supplying just over 15% of oil and almost 38% of imports. of the block's LNG.
In terms of total gas, LNG and pipeline imports combined, US exports covered a fifth of EU demand last year, second only to the 30% that came from neighboring Norway, which is linked with several pipes.
EU officials declined to confirm whether Trump, as implied in his social media post, had delivered the ultimatum to Brussels through any official channel.
"I can only confirm that we have seen the tweets, the basis on which you have raised your questions," said the Commission's chief deputy spokesman, Stefan de Keersmaecker, underlining once again "the importance of further strengthening a relationship already strong".
