"The sovereignty of the Panama Canal, non-negotiable" - The Panamanian

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino reaffirmed the country's sovereignty over the Panama Canal in a statement co-signed by three of the country's former presidents in response to recent threats from US President-elect Donald Trump.

Calling the Panama Canal "a vital national asset for the United States", Trump criticized what he called "unfair tariffs" on US ships passing through the Canal and threatened to seek control of the waterway "returned" to Washington.

Trump's statement was met with strong opposition from the Panamanian side. The latest communique from the presidents reiterated that Panama's sovereignty and independence are non-negotiable.

"As former presidents, we support the statements of President Jose Raul Mulino and we unite under the affirmation that the sovereignty of our country and our channel are not negotiable," the former presidents said.

The statement stated that the channel's mission is to serve humanity and trade, which is one of the great values that Panamanians offer to the world, giving the international community a guarantee not to participate in any conflict.

The Panama Canal is an important commercial territory protected by international law, the Torrijos-Carter Treaty and the Treaty Concerning the Neutrality and Permanent Operation of the Canal, which, as immovable law, establishes that the waterway is an inalienable part of Panama.

The man-made waterway connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific was completed by the United States in 1914 and returned to Panama in 1999 under a treaty signed by then-US President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos. Under the agreement, the US government would relinquish control over the channel by the year 2000, guaranteeing its neutrality.
