Strong explosions, Venezuela declares state of emergency/ Maduro government:

At least seven explosions were heard around 2:00 a.m. local time in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, as well as low-flying aircraft. One of the targets reportedly hit was Fort Tiuna, Venezuela’s main military complex, which houses the Defense Ministry and the Military Academy, among other things. The explosions come as the U.S. military has targeted suspected drug-smuggling ships in recent days. Attacks also occurred in the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, a government statement said, prompting President Nicolas Maduro to declare a national emergency and mobilize defense forces. Explosions, aircraft and black smoke could be seen across the capital, according to Reuters witnesses and images circulating on social media.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly promised ground operations in Venezuela. He has not publicly detailed his intentions, but has privately pressured Maduro to leave the country, Reuters reported. Trump said on Monday that it would be "smart" for Maduro to leave power. The Pentagon referred questions to the White House, which declined to comment.

The Venezuelan government said in a statement that the aim of the attack was for the United States to take over the country's oil and minerals. It added that the United States "will not succeed" in taking the resources.
