US proposes a 30-day ceasefire – What to expect from the conversation

US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he would speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who "hopefully" will agree to a proposed 30-day ceasefire following US-Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia.

" We have a great meeting with Russia tomorrow and hopefully some great conversations will follow ," Trump said. Trump added that he hopes the deal can be reached in the coming days.

Tuesday's talks in Saudi Arabia between Ukraine and the US culminated in a joint statement in which Ukraine said it was ready to accept an immediate 30-day ceasefire with Russia proposed by the US.

The US also said it would immediately resume intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine, which Washington had suspended after an unprecedented row between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.

Zelenskyy said in his nightly speech at X that the US proposal for a ceasefire includes a 30-day temporary full ceasefire: a halt to missile, drone and bomb attacks, including in the Black Sea and along the entire front line.

Ukraine is ready to accept this proposal, we see it as a positive step and we are ready to take it,” Zelenskyy said, adding that Russia must “ show its readiness to stop the war or continue the war .” “ It is time for the full truth, ” he said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said after the talks concluded that he would present the offer to Russia. " If they say no, then unfortunately we will know what the obstacle to peace is here ," Rubio said, adding that the ball was in Russia's court.

The Kremlin has not yet responded publicly to the proposal, although it said on Tuesday it would issue a statement on the deal after being informed by the US.

Moscow's Foreign Ministry said Russia had not ruled out the possibility of talks with US representatives in the coming days.

The ministry spokeswoman added that Moscow's position will be decided domestically, not shaped "abroad due to some agreements or efforts of some parties."

Putin has repeatedly stated that Moscow wants a comprehensive solution and not a temporary ceasefire.

The Russian leader has stuck to his terms that he would cease hostilities on the condition that Ukraine drop its offer to join NATO and recognize the regions Moscow has occupied as Russian.

Hostilities continued overnight after five were killed in Russian attacks in Ukraine, including one person in Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih.

Four people, believed to be Syrian nationals, were also killed in the port city of Odessa after Russia attacked a cargo ship bound for Algeria, Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said. Several buildings, including homes, were also damaged in Kharkiv and the Dnipropetrovsk region.
