Air conditioner manufacturers in Asia gain in Europe - Scorching heat on the old continent has increased demand

As Europe swelters in record-breaking temperatures, Asian air conditioner manufacturers, such as South Korea's Samsung Electronics, China's Midea and Japan's Mitsubishi Electric, are seeing a sales boom.
Air conditioning is common in buildings, transport and homes in major cities across Asia, but it is rare in Europe and people are struggling to stay cool as the scorching heat claims lives, cuts power supplies and closes schools.
Seeking a break from the scorching weather, people and companies across Europe are buying portable and stationary air conditioners, as some countries warn that the heatwave could intensify.
"With temperatures expected to rise further from June onwards, we expect steady demand during the peak cooling season," Samsung Electronics said in a statement. Key markets, including Italy, Spain and France, generated double-digit sales growth in the first half of this year, it added.
It’s a similar story for China’s Midea, which has seen soaring demand for its PortaSplit air conditioner, which the company says has seen orders so strong that second-hand prices have exceeded the cost of new units. “A heat wave in the last two weeks of May significantly boosted sales, especially for the PortaSplit air conditioner, which was sold across multiple channels,” Midea said.
Sales through German e-commerce channels rose by around 37% in May compared to a year earlier, while shipments to Spain and France rose by 108% compared to a year earlier, the company added. The massive demand for cooling equipment highlights the shift in European consumer behavior as the countries grapple with profound climate change.
However, in Europe, older buildings can make installing air conditioners expensive and complicated, often requiring long wait times for assembly. Midea said the cost of installing an air conditioner in Europe can cost more than 1,000 euros, making it unaffordable for many households.
According to the International Energy Agency, total ownership of air conditioning units in Europe is around 20%.
