US-China tech battle "ignites" / Washington blocks chip shipments to

The US government has revoked the authorization that allowed Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to freely ship essential equipment from the US to China. The decision takes effect on December 31 and follows the Trump administration's moves to restrict shipments from Samsung and SK Hynix to China.

This is expected to significantly impact production at TSMC's main factory in Nanjing, China, which makes earlier-generation chips, as any future shipments will require export licenses. However, TSMC's most advanced chip production takes place in Taiwan and the US, not in China.

"While we are assessing the situation and taking appropriate measures, including communicating with the US government, we remain fully committed to ensuring the uninterrupted operation of our Nanjing factory," TSMC said in a statement.

The decision comes at a time when the competition between the US and China has intensified, with both countries aiming for dominance in the development of advanced technologies.

It also comes as the two superpowers continue trade talks. On August 12, both sides agreed to temporarily lower tariffs for 90 days before negotiating a final settlement.

The Biden administration imposed restrictions on China's chip industry in 2022, but allowed exemptions for large companies like TSMC, provided they shared certain information with the U.S. government. It is not yet known how quickly the U.S. government will issue the necessary licenses, which could slow shipments and hamper production.

Critics of this decision warn that the move could discourage innovation in China, as companies will be forced to find local suppliers.
