Commissioner's Office meets with Bank executives/Dervishi: New law on

The Commissioner for the Right to Information and Personal Data Protection, Mr. Besnik Dervishi, held a meeting with the leaders of banking institutions and the Albanian Banking Association.

The law, which entered into force in February of this year, aligns the Albanian legal framework with the most advanced standards of the European Union, offering Albanian citizens the same level of protection as EU citizens.

In his speech, Commissioner Dervishi emphasized that the reason for launching the sectoral dialogue with banks is related to the fact that they are among the largest controllers and processors of personal data.

He brought to attention several problems identified over the years, emphasizing that shortcomings should be evaluated as opportunities to undertake further improvements.

Dervishi also highlighted concern about the frequent requests by public authorities for personal data, which often go beyond their scope of activity.

"We, as the Commissioner's Office, do not want to base our relationship with you on the "fear" of high fines, but on partnership and a behavior of mutual trust," said the Commissioner.

"The new law is a challenge, but also an opportunity.

Challenging, because it requires more effort, investment, and change in the way you operate on a daily basis.

Opportunity, because it allows for the building of a more transparent and sustainable relationship with personal data protection subjects, increasing credibility towards the sector."

Mr. Dervishi guaranteed that his Office will remain open for dialogue and support, inviting banks to become a positive example for the data protection culture in Albania, according to the best international standards.

The Chairman of the Albanian Banking Association, Mr. Bledar Shella, stated that: "Many banks have taken measures, invested in systems and training, but this is an ongoing process. Implementing the law has costs, but of course it also brings significant benefits."

In their reactions, bank executives expressed appreciation for the open dialogue and underlined their commitment to consolidating cooperation.
