Venezuelan oil, US investment of 100 billion dollars - US Secretary of Energy: Production increase by 30%

Venezuelan oil, US investment of 100 billion dollars - US Secretary of Energy:

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told oil company executives that Venezuela's production could increase by 30% from the current level of 900,000 barrels per day, executives who attended the meeting said.

Increasing crude oil production from Venezuela, which holds the world's largest reserves, is a top goal for President Donald Trump after US forces arrested Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

Wright's closed-door meeting with the leaders took place at the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland.

Years of underinvestment and sanctions have caused Venezuela's oil production to plummet. Venezuela now accounts for just 1% of global production.

Trump has said he plans to control Venezuela's oil resources indefinitely as he seeks to rebuild its ravaged industry with a $100 billion plan. So far, his administration has pulled 50 million barrels of oil from Venezuela and is selling some of it on the open market.

Trump met with more than 15 oil executives earlier this month at the White House, during which CEO Darren Woods told Trump that Venezuela would have to change its laws before it could be an attractive investment opportunity.
