Meta Platforms plans to spend up to $65 billion this year to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. The company aims to strengthen its position against rivals OpenAI and Google in the race to dominate the technology.

As part of the investment, Meta will increase hiring in positions related to artificial intelligence and build a data center of more than 2 gigawatts, which would be large enough to cover a significant portion of Manhattan.

The company aims to end the year with over 1.3 million graphics processors and plans to bring about 1 GW of computing power online by 2025.

The announcement comes just days after US President Donald Trump announced that OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle will form a venture called Stargate and invest $500 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Earlier this month, Microsoft said it was planning to invest about $80 billion in fiscal year 2025 to develop data centers, while Amazon has said its spending for 2025 would be higher than the $75 billion it made in 2024.

Meta has emerged as a protagonist in the new technology race with the artificial intelligence chatbot, Ray-Ban smart glasses, and the open-source approach of Llama models.

Zuckerberg expects the AI assistant, available across all services, to serve more than 1 billion people by 2025, up from about 600 million monthly active users it had last year.

The capital spending of $60 billion to $65 billion estimated for 2025 would mark a significant increase from last year, when a figure of $40 billion was reported.
