The US war in Iran has cost 25 billion USD - The cost is equal to NASA's budget for this year

The United States' war on Iran has cost $25 billion so far, a senior Pentagon official said, providing the first official estimate of the military's cost of the conflict. Just six months before the midterm elections, in which President Donald Trump's Republicans could face an uphill battle to hold onto the House majority, Democrats are rising in public opinion polls as they try to link the unpopular Iran war to affordability.
Jules Hurst, who is acting comptroller, told lawmakers on the House Armed Services Committee that most of that money was for ammunition. Hurst did not elaborate on what that cost estimate included or whether it took into account the projected costs of rebuilding and repairing basic infrastructure in the Middle East damaged by conflict.
The $25 billion cost is equal to NASA's entire budget for this year.
But it is unclear how the Pentagon arrived at the $25 billion figure, given that a source said last month that President Donald Trump's administration estimated that the first six days of the war had cost the United States at least $11.3 billion.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers that the cost was justified given the U.S. goal of ensuring that Iran does not have nuclear weapons.
Hegseth tried to defend the Iran war more broadly in fiery comments, attacking Democratic lawmakers as "reckless" for criticizing the unpopular conflict.
The United States began carrying out strikes against Iran on February 28, and the two sides are currently holding a fragile ceasefire. The Pentagon has sent tens of thousands of additional troops to the Middle East, including keeping three aircraft carriers in the region. Thirteen American troops have been killed in the conflict and hundreds more have been wounded.
Disruptions in oil and natural gas shipments since the start of the war have caused a rise in the prices of gasoline in the US and agricultural products such as chemical fertilizers, in addition to a long list of other high consumer prices.
