Global airlines record growth in 2025 - Industry expected to top $1 trillion in revenue despite challenges
Global airlines raised their profit forecasts for 2025 compared to last year, forecasting revenue to exceed a trillion dollars for the first time and a record 5.2 billion passengers globally.
Airlines around the world have seen their growth hampered by difficulties at planemakers Boeing and Airbus, which have delayed deliveries. Without newer, more efficient planes, airlines say they can't lower fuel costs while flying more passengers.
However, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said it expected the industry worldwide to generate $36.6 billion in net profit this year, up from $31.5 billion in net profit expected in 2024.
"All of these efforts will help mitigate some of the drag on profitability that is beyond the airlines' control, namely ongoing supply chain challenges ... and the growing tax burden," said Association CEO Willie Walsh. .
This situation comes four years after the industry fell to a loss of $140 billion in 2020 as a result of the pandemic, but has quickly recovered thanks to high travel demand. Jet fuel prices are also expected to drop, providing a relief to airlines.
However, uncertainty related to global conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as the upcoming US presidential administration could pose risks to the health of the sector, explained Air Transport Association official sources.
Passenger yield, or the average amount paid by a passenger to fly one mile, is expected to decline by 3.4% compared to 2024.
